She was born March 22, 1911 in Kalamazoo, the daughter of the late Henry and Bertha (Schreuder) Sportel. Mrs. Smith was employed by Phil Gernaat Greenhouse for over 30 years. She also worked for Kalamazoo Vegetable for over 7 years. Dena was a member of Heritage Christian Reformed Church and also attended Westwood Church of God. She enjoyed sewing, crafts, and upholstery. On February 25, 1935, she was united in marriage to the late John Smith in Kalamazoo. Surviving are 2 sons, Robert "Bob" (Bonnie) Smith of Cadillac and Ronald (Donna) Smith of Scotts; one sister, Sinnie Yzenbaard of Kalamazoo; 7 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death are her husband, John, on May 15, 1999; an infant daughter, Bertha; a sister, Ella Sportel; and daughter-in-law, Lynn Smith. Memorial services for Mrs. Smith will be at 11:00 AM on Thursday at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick Street with Rev. Vernon Luchies officiating. Private interment will be in Mt. Ever-Rest Memorial Park. Friends may visit with the family from 6-8 PM Wednesday evening at the funeral home. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be directed to Alzheimer's Association or Hospice Care of Published in the Kalamazoo Gazette on 9/27/2005.
